A Pan American Airways Martin M-130, Philippine Clipper, skims the wavetops enroute to Hawaii on the afternoon of December 8, 1941. Having been caught on the ground at Wake Island during the Japanese attack, she was holed several ties by enemy aircraft. Her crew stripped some of her interior amenities to make more room for the atoll's evacuees, refueld and headed for Pearl Harbor. Two weks later Wake Island fell to the Japanese invaders.
