Il Mantovano Volante (The Flying Mantuan). L'Uomo Bolide (Torpedo Man). Nivola. These were just some of the nicknames for Italian race car driver Tazio Nuvolari, the last of which is the hardest to literally translate--think of the nostalgic way one might feel seeing kicked-up dust clouds floating against a clear blue sky and you'll be closing in on the sentiment. The legendary Nuvolari truly cemented his place in racing history at the 1930 Mille Miglia--the 1,000-mile full-out speed and endurance race famous for traversing every extreme the Italian roadways have to offer--where he broke all records and surpassed that magical average of 100 kilometers-per-hour. And this powerful overhead image of the driver behind the wheel of his Alfa Romeo does more to cement his legendary status than any exaggerated vision of victory, with its conjoining of man and machine into a single automotive force to be reckoned with.
