Midget racing was hugely popular before World War II, especially in the US. The cars were relatively inexpensive, allowing young enthusiasts to participate, and the races were run with a 'devil-may-care' spirit that suited the future daredevils of the major circuits. Ham's design, meant probably as a stock image to be used with appropriate particulars from event to event, captures the frenzied atmosphere with a spectacular jumble of racers hell-bent for the finish line.
