According to his comprehensive publication, ""Cappiello: The Posters of Leonetto Cappiello,"" Jack Rennert--a recognized global expert on the artist--has this to say about the poster: ""Ricqles, a silk merchant from Lyon, is credited with the invention of 'alcool de menthe' in 1938, originally claiming for it the usual all-healing properies associated with most of the stomach bitters of that period, except that Mr. Ricqles took it a step further by saying that he was inspired by divine guidance. Perhaps that's why we see two angels on the bottle's label and why we have a divine creature enraptured with the heavenly product"" (p. 252).
