A stunning poster for the 1924 French film ""The Inhuman."" The story, described here as ""a fairy tale"" or ""fable,"" is about a great singing star - cold, haughty, beautiful. Her house is the very temple of fashionable Paris society. Her suitors range from a scientist to the Maharajah of Nopur. But her casual snub of one of them brings about her downfall; he fakes his own ""accidental"" death, and she is blamed for it. The poster design reflects the tastes of the director, Marcel L'Herbier: He was steeped in the avant garde of the day, some of whose leading artists contributed to his films. For L'Inhumaine, Darius Milhaud composed the score and Robert Mallet-Stevens and Femand Leger designed the set, part of which is depicted in the poster's middle-left. Rare!
