Born and educated in Switzerland, Marfurt worked closely with the Belgian painter Jules de Praeter. Together, they came in 1921 to Belgium where Marfurt settled and eventually opened a studio in Antwerp. From 1917 on, when he started his own agency in Switzerland, he produced a variety of works, including some magnificent posters for Chrysler, Remington, Purfina and the British Railways, for whom he created his masterful Flying Scotsman. In this Belgium cigarette poster-executed appropriately and entirely in the colors of the Belgian flag-the enchanting young woman in the plumed hat doesn't even have to be shown smoking in order to cast her vote for the brand. And as if her frank, persuasive glance weren't endorsement enough, the cigarettes also offer coupons for premiums inside. Rare!
