In 1889, Thomas Edison was the first to present filmed motionóin the form of peephole machines designed for individual viewing. Six years later, the initial public presentation of the Lumiere Brothers cinematographe (a camera and projector of their own design) took place in Paris. It consisted of only a dozen brief scenes, but its understanding that the future of film lay in mass viewing by means of projection proved revolutionary. For some reason, the names Paul Mortier and Alethorama are not equally familiar to students of film history. According to the 1896 patent request, Mortier's system of projection ""overcomes the disadvantages in the methods created by Lumiere and Edison by replacing jerky movement with motion that is smooth and uniform."" We don't know whether the patent was granted, but the names are dust. What does remain is Pean's very handsome design.
