In all of his poster work, Dupas presents highly stylized, very fashionable people from the very fringes of our imagination, occupants of the realm that exists in the split second before true wakefulness alchemizes into a peaceful slumber, gorgeous quasi-humans with Modigliani necks in idealized and extravagant settings. His women are statuesque in a nearly literal sense. And to the contemporary eye, they appear, in fact, as monuments to a natural extension of a time and place when all was glitter and sophistication, so many head-turning mannequins in the chic 1920 window of our psyche. This pair of elegantly appointed distortions caught in an eternally immediate moment of maternal tenderness could have been used in its finished state to promote any number of Parisian fetes or couture announcements; In this primal artistic state, however, they convey Dupas fantastically wielded command to connect the viewer with the fringes of an existence they can almost literally only dream of.
