One of the earliest Russian sound films, with a score by Dmitri Shostakovich, this story of a rustic lad coming to work in a big city gets its ironic title from a popular Russian song that describes metropolitan life as Rivers of Flowing Wine and Golden Mountains. The country bumpkin, Peter, arrives in Petrograd in 1914 and finds work in a factory. When the foreman strikes a worker, the men walkout: Peter, unaware of what has happened, stays at his machine. The threatened strike is averted and the factory owners son rewards him with a gold watch for his loyalty. But when he is asked to attack the leader of the workers revolt, Peter finally realizes how the system works, throws the watch back in the owners face and joins his comrades. The Stenbergs give each of the major characters his own color panel in a Y-shaped design that suggests the films conflicting forces. Director Sergei Yutkevich flourished during the Stalin era - unlike many of his former colleagues - by crediting a string of works that hewed strictly to party principles.
