The powerful beam from a lightship (a sort floating lighthouse) bathes the leader of a majestic procession of ships heading across the Channel. Mason, in fact, titles his painting, The Night Parade from Harwich. This is one of a number of lushly romantic posters by the artist for the ship services of this railway. Mason served in the Royal Navy before launching himself as a marine painter. In addition to his rail and shipping clients, he did artwork for engineering and shipbuilding companies.
