Cars began as toys or transportation for the wealth, so not surprisingly, a number of Europes best-known early race drivers were aristocrats in search of thrills. Here a fiery red and orange image with an apocalyptic feel shows the Baron Pierre de Crawhez set to start the Circuit des Ardennes, an annual race organized by the Automobile Clubs of Belgium from 1902 to 1907. The other auto races of the day were city-to-city on the public roads, with all the stops and delays that entailed. This was the first with its own course, and thus became the industry standard: It is racing, in the absolute sense of the word and with all its mishaps; the drivers and cars endurance is submitted to the toughest of tests.
