An extraordinary image--and extraordinarily colored: we know of no known figures in classical mythology that are supposed to be blue or green Nor can we be sure what this beautifully rendered slaying specifically has to do with a manufacturer of copper sulfates. However, since the blue-colored product is sprayed on grapes and vines to stop the spread of mold and mildew, we can surmise that the scene shows the demise of said fungi (the green figure) once it comes up against the advertised product. In any event, the image ranks among the most striking and evocative of all of its turn-of-the-century, allegory-rich Italian contemporaries. Bernardi was born near Turin and lived most of his life there. Besides his pictorial work (posters, murals, landscapes, portraits), he was also a sculptor, evidenced in his rich model of the human anatomy.
