This small poster was made for the English paper manafacturers J. and E. Bella who organized poster exhibitions at the Royal Aquarium, London, in 1894 and 1896, to which they invited Lautrec. (Adriani, p. 144) In fact, the Confetti design was the cover piece of their exhibition catalogue. ""Confetti epitomizes Lautrec's conceptual simplicity: broad masses are effectively defined with utmost economy of means. His deftly inflected lines emerge more calligraphically by virtue of the light-colored image, with its broad sweep of billowing, off-white dress. In this poster Lautrec's dematerialization of form borders on abstraction. The conception and concision of Confetti serve to distinguish Lautrec's inventiveness from that of Cheret and his other contemporaries, who also treated the popular motif of a smiling girl."" (Wagner, pp.25-26) The Bellas commissioned this poster ""to advertise the flecks of paper they sold to replace plaster confetti which, considered too dangerous, had finally been outlawed in Paris in 1892."" (Frey, p.385)
