This is one of Mucha's most frequently used designs, Originally it was produced for the publisher Champenois for an 1897 calendar, and almost immediately it was chosen as well by the editor of La Plume for a calendar for the same year. After that the lithograph appeared without text as a decorative panel and again as calendars... The great success of this composition is due to several factors. First is the beauty of the central figure. Mucha's contemporaries perceived her to be an oriental princess, desirable and at the same time unreachable. Next is the remarkable connection between the stylization of the figure... and the naturalistic drawing of the foliage in the upper part of the lithograph. This is the one way Mucha created subtle tension... Last but not least is the harmony of the composition and the colors as a whole. It is obvious from the lithograph that it was produced when Mucha could fully afford to concentrate on every detail of this time-consuming composition. After 1897, the year of his exhibitions in Paris and his celebrity in artistic circles, he had much less time for such details, and the naturalistic elements seem to disappear from his work.
