This poster for the inaugural of the Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center, New York, in 1966 borrows a detail from The Triumph of Music, one of the two large decorations by Chagall that flank the entrance to the opera house. According to Sorlier, the subject is the opera Carmen and it is Rudolf Bing, the Met's director and the man who commissioned the Chagall works who is represented as the central character.
