two birds with layered colors unique to Hohlwein 1908. Hohlweins more than one thousand posters made German Gebrauchsgraphik (commercial art) a leading force of poster design in the 1920s and 1930s. His special way of applying colors, letting them dry at different times, and printing one on top of the other, producing modulations of shading, has often been copied, but never equaled. He belonged to no school or group, his art and personality are an unprecedented phenomenon in the history of German poster art (Rademacher, p. 22). This technique of layering single color creates a spectacular fricative depth to the pastel herons which draw ones attention to The Four Seasons, Munichs home for the latest fashions. No article of clothing is rendered, and quite frankly, their inclusion would be an unnecessary excess--Hohlwein creates an immediate interest without them. Rare.
