1925 French Transatlantic Cruise Ship to Cuba, Mexico and the United States. Less stately than many of Sebilles other images for the CGT, this looser design seems appropriate for the warmer waters of the Caribbean. Of the three steamships that served this southern route, the poster illustrates the red-stacked Espagne. Small craft on either side of the ship not only give it scale, they also suggest escorts and a certain sense of festivity. The bottom panel is left blank to accommodate the name of the local shipping agent. Since the Cuba wasn't completed until 1923 and the Lafayette was renamed Mexique in 1928, this poster must have been created sometime in those five intervening years. Sebille was successful and prolific maritime artist, many of whose paintings adorned staterooms of French Line ships. His posters for the company are some of the best ever done.
