A bold design in off-beat colors is evidently an attempt to suggest that the horsey set favors the Audi. In the cited work, there is the additional text: ""Audi, der Rassewagen"" (Audi, the Thoroughbred Car). Witzel, an accomplished painter and illustrator, was a regular contributor to Jugend. Audi was the brainchild of auto pioneer August Horch, originally an engineer with Benz who went out on his own in 1899.
