Caen, a quiet Normandy town on the banks of the Orne, is still remembered by some veterans for being nearly totally razed in fierce fighting in World War II following the 1944 invasion by the Allies. Perhaps to help erase the image eight years later, Hervieu gives his poster a serene, bright aspect, and emphasizes the fact that the course runs through unspoiled rural vistas.
