The Leviathan was originally a German ship called Vaterland (""Fatherland""). At 950 feet long, she was one of the largest steamers of her day. When WWI broke out, the Germans decided to intern the ship rather than risk capture, and she remained in New Jersey until the U.S. joined the war and confiscated her. After changing her name to Leviathan, the U.S. used the vessel as a troop ship. Once the war was over, the ship was converted to a transatlantic passenger liner - the largest under a U.S. flag. She was launched with great public fervor on the Fourth of July, 1923.
