Since the 1980's, Felix Gonzales-torres, and American artist born in Cuba, worked on perfecting his multidimensional art--installations using the materials of everyday life, photography, posters, and silkscreens--all highly conceptual and strongly provocative. In 1987 he joined Group Material, a group of artists working out of a storefront gallery in New York City's East Village, whose projects on social issues have been large-scale and very public; the AIDS crisis was one of his ongoing themes (it was the cause of his death). His initial billboard project, in 1989, was a single poster commemorating the twentieth anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion, situated just one block from the original site of the riots. The theme continues on the eight-sheet billboard here. The original edition of this image (untitled, but often referred to as ""Perfect Lovers"") was created in 1991 and displayed in New York in 1992 in conjuncion with an exhibit of Gonzales-torres' work at the city's Museum of Mocdern Art. This later eight-sheet edition, prepared in 1996, was posted in 100 sites (donated by the Dauphin billboard posting firm) in and around Paris as part of an eshibition of the artist's work at the Musee d'Art moderne
