Though most-closely associated with the stages of Europe--especially France--Josephine Baker was a superstar of global proportions, appreciated least of all during her lifetime in the United States--a fact that's as sad as it is ironic. This poster, designed by Soler from her infamously lon-lived publicity photo, is for an Argentine appearance in 1949, the period during which she was managed by her then husband, Jo Bouillon. This was but one appearance on a sporadic Latin American appearance schedule that would begin in 1947 with engagements in Mexico and conclude with a Cuban stop in 1950. The photo used here would be the publicity image used by Baker, doled-out for over a decade and long after life's obstacles had wiped the blush of youth from her visage.
