Bal Negre 0000-1154

This lithograph is based on Colins famous 1927 poster for Bal Negre. Although he also dated this the same year, it was most likely executed at a later date. It bears a dedication to his friend, the actress Flaure. This one-night event at the Theatre de Champs-Elsees was meant to crown the whole black craze which swept into Paris a year-and-a-half earlier with Josephine Baker and the Revue Negre. It was organized entirely by Paul Colin and was a hugely successful event. This is in many ways his best poster design, full of the movement and vitality that his earlier poster for Revue Negre lacked. Josephine Baker was not the model but, according to Colin, quite definitely his inspiration.
