An impressive depiction of the Majestic, at the time the star of the White Star Line. The company acquired the German liner Bismarck which had been seized by the British government as part of the German war reparations, and renamed it the Majestic. Originally built in 1914 in Hamburg, the 56,000-ton liner was 955 feet long, its eight steam turbines and quadruple screws capable of propelling it at a speed of 24 knots. The ship was turned over to the British Admiralty in 1936 and used as a training vessel, until a fire gutted it at Rosyth off the Scottish coast, and it sank with the loss of 12 lives. Thomas was a marine painter and poster artist who did most of his studies and work in Liverpool.
