For the Eighth International Venice Art Exhibition, de Karolis creates this dream-like painterly image of a flag being unfurled to the God of Art, his rendered golden image standing out boldly against the crimson cloth as it flutters against the Venetian backdrop, the campnile still unfinished, its top covered with scaffolding. As their companion on the balcony brandishes her sculpture to Heaven, the idol they summon emerges from the clouds, carrying a laurel wreath to place on the head of the most worthy. A wonderfully surreal vision.
