The last of the truly giant Barnum & Bailey spectacles were produced during 1917-18 season. After this, the special stages at one side of the Big Top were eliminated ant the spectacles, which followed, though often very elaborate and spectacular, were limited to marches around the hippodrome track. In this poster for Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp, an oriental procession forms a serpentine file near the walls of a distant eastern mecca. The focus is on the young rider atop a magnificent black horse. A spectacular contrast exists between the youths indigo robes and the jade-emerald of the bespangled harness, the riders necklace and peacock feather and the outfits of his two nearest attendants, creating a colorful feast for the eyes that is without a doubt the posters highlighting feature. The rest of the procession, although obscured partially by the group in the fore, is nevertheless shown in exquisite detail, including canopied carriers for the ladies and along dragon formed by the many marchers. The distinct Chinese flavor of the parade is somewhat at odds with Aladdins purported Indian background, but we cant imagine that many of the spectators quibbled over the issue.
