As the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) gathered momentum, all sources were mobilized to carry on the struggle. Here, the C.N.T. (Confederation Nacional del Trabajo), a powerful labor organization, supports the buildup of Spanish air forces, most likely in response to the aerial bombardment of a defenseless small town, Guernica, by Nazi bombers on April 28, 1937. The designer chose the figure of Greek mythology's Icarus to symbolize victory in the air.
