A dogsled scene on the Aletsch Glacier advertises the railroad to the Jungfraujoch Station, the highest-as well as the most expensive-train ride in Europe. The last stop is at 3,457 meters (about 11,400 feet). Zurich born Burger studied lithography at Karlsruhe, then spent five years abroad (two of them in the U.S.) before settling down in his homeland. He was active mainly as painter and book illustrator, and did a few occasional posters. In these, he reveals a painterly sensitivity to composition and a good feel for colors: note how he uses various pastel shades to achieve the contrast between brightly lit and shadowy sides of the mountains.
