Piaf's face appears to float on a shimmering palate of red brush strokes, together with her hands in a rapturous gesture. Born Edith Gassion, she got her stage name (a Parisian term for a sparrow) from her first night club employer. With her power of characterization and her strong, melodious voice, she was one of the most influential song stylists of post-war France.
