A moody, mystic conception of woman as the quintessence of sin advertises Arthur van Schendel's play ""Pandorra"" for its opening at the Dutch Theater. Influenced by cubism, Toorop gave the design not only angularity but a kind of gothic grimness befitting the tragic nature of the play. Born on the island of Java in what were then the Dutch East Indies, Toorop moved with his family back to the Netherlands at age 11, studied art at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, and became a painter of some renown. In the 1880s, he came under the influence of William Morris' Arts and Crafts movement and devoted himself to graphic arts. There are six known specimens of this image: four in museums and two privately owned. This is one of them.
