Million za uzhin/The Million-Dollar Dinner 0000-1451

This Russian release of a 1922 German film stars Ossi Oswalda, a flamboyant Berlin sophisticate who came closest to being the only real flapper Germany every put on film. Still in her teens, she was discovered in 1916 by pioneer director Ernst Lubitsch, who cast her in the comedies and farces he was then making in Berlin. It was he who gave her screen name (her real name was Oswalda Staglich), but she earned her stardom on her own, showing a great talent for creating memorable comedy characters in the manner of her Hollywood contemporary Clara Bow. She could be a sweetheart, a flirt, even the other woman, and she never take herself seriously for a moment. Sadly, she died in Prague in 1948, in dire poverty and totally forgotten. The plot of this particular vehicle of hers is lost, but we can be certain it was silly, light-hearted, and lots of fun. Semyonovs design shows her as a winsome, cigar-chomping capitalist against a cubist landscape of skyscrapers and mountains. The grinning black bellhop whose face fills the O in Oswaldas name was a staple of comedy at the time. After Semyonov graduated from art school in Kharkov, he spent much of his time between 1920 and 1925 producing posters for the Ukrainian branch of Rosta. A designer of film posters and stage sets, he is also known for the Soviet Pavillions he created for international expositions throughout Europe.
