Katorga/Forced Labor. 0000-1434

This indictment of convict labor camps for political prisoners under the Czarist regime was produced by Gosvoyenko, a newly-formed film unit of the Soviet Army. While most of the units work turned out to be doctrinaire and dull, this first effort, made by respected directed Yuli Raizman with a capable cast, gained some acclaim for its stark portrayal of the inhuman conditions in Siberian work camps during the early decades of the century. The plot concerns an unsuccessful revolt of the political prisoners against a new warden who turns out to be a cruel, sadistic tyrant. The director reveals his strong admiration for the German expressionist masters in his handling of the film; these same influences show up in the lurid lighting, intense expressions and clawing hands in the poster design.
