Rhead provides an opulent design with peacocks in a lush garden for a French journal. Together with a companion design featuring swans, it was issued in versions both with and without text. Duverney, in the June, 1898, issue of ""The Poster"" calls these ""two magnificent specimens of the American artist's work; they will go on a level with any of Morris' wall-paper designs, asin them Rhead has certainly given us the top note of his highly decorative powers"" (p. 28). Rhead was one of the first poster artists to gain an international reputation. Born in England, he was quite active in London, New York and Paris with equal success; his exhibition of posters in New York in 1895 was America's first, and was well received. Rhead was heavily influenced by Grasset, whom he admired and met while in Paris.
