Aelita Russian Sci Fi Poster 0000-1237

This poster is for the German release of the 1924 Russian silent film of the same name - the first Russian cinematic attempt at science fiction and a work of Bolshevik propaganda to boot. The hero is a Soviet inventor who builds a spaceship, travels to Mars and helps ignite a revolution among Queen Aelitas slaves to create a communist society. The film is also memorable for its Constructivist sets and costumes -futuristic and ancient at the same time - designed by Alexander Rodchenko. Whereas the original Russian poster focused on Aelitas proles, the German design gives us the queen herself - luridly colored and all fierce eyes in a masculine face that sprouts objects of pain and warfare. It is not clear whether Grasnick is the creator - or simply the printer - of this triple-breasted threat.
