A line of readers at the library, engrossed to a man in their copies of the Hollandsche Revue, a literary journal published by DeErven Loosjes in Haarlem. A masterful drawing, fascinating for its authentic historical feel, detail, and characters, from an age when libraries provided ashtrays and at least permitted if not supplied liquid refreshment. Dooijes and Brattinga tell us that Van Caspel represent the group of young progressive artist who pursued high ethical and aesthetic ideals and gave expression to them in their poster designs. A retrospective of his posters was recently on display at Amsterdam Historic Museum
