Nemesis is the classical Greek personification of righteous anger, exacting retribution from all who violate the natural order of things, whether by breaking moral laws, through an excess of riches or happiness or through moral arrogance. The classically morbid Fenneker creation for the Big Italian Showcase Film, Il Viaggio (The Voyage), renamed Nemesis for its German release revels in the inevitabilities of retribution and mortality. In this story, a young Sicilian bride is unexpectedly widowed, and by local custom is forced to live in seclusion. She rebels against her condition, especially after she is informed by her physician that she has an incurable disease. So she treats herself to a whirlwind junket of Italy in the company of her brother-in-law, with whom she is in love. Her nemesis, in this case, turns out to be herself, and consumed with guilt, she commits suicide in Venice. Written and directed with elegant finesse by Gennaro Righelli, with fine performances from Maria Jacobini and Carlo Benetti, the film was a big public favorite of the period, both in Italy and abroad.
