Barnum London Circus Chinese Giant Chang-Tu-Sing 0000-0618

In 1881, when James Bailey and P.T. Barnum entered into their new partnership, they traveled under the title Barnum and Great London Circus. It was at this time that Chang-Tu-Sing, the Chinese Goliath, was an attraction in their combined shows. According to the text which accompanies the Asian titan on the poster, Chang was the most gigantic and finely proportioned man in existence, his comparative size with ordinary human beings accurately displayed on this plate. An educated and refined gentleman, speaking 26 languages fluently. Recently arrived from Europe under contract with P.T. Barnum, Jas. Bailey and Jas. L. Hutchinson, at a salary of $600.00 per week. According to a pamphlet sold by Chang, he claimed to be nine feet tall and to weigh 350 pounds. Later on, further reliable medical measurements cut him down to a mere seven feet, eight-and-one half inches, which is probably the most accurate estimate of all. Chang would appear onstage with his wife and a midget seated at his feet and simply allow viewers to marvel at the disproportionate nature of it all. After touring the world, he returned to his native China, where he would remain until his death in 1893. One of the earliest and rarest of Barnum sheets.
