Many silent films took their scenarios from short stories that appeared in magazines of the day. This Austrian release--its original U.S. title was The City That Never Sleeps--was adapted from a story in McCalls called Mother O Day, in which a widowed saloonkeeper sends her daughter away to be raised in better circumstances, only to see her bcome a selfish, snobbish flapper who associates with crooks and adventurers. James Cruze, who directed Ruggles of Red Gap and The Covered Wagon in 1923, launched the trend for westerns with wide-open spaces and went on to become the highest salaried producer of his era. In 1925, he made another ambitious western, The Pone Express with the dashing Valentino-esque Ricardo Cortez who stars here. Nothing is known about the Vienna-based artist.
