This is Cherets original design for the famous 1897 poster for Loie Fullers performance at the Folies-Bergere. As with most Cheret designs, it is a mixture of gouache, pastel and ink on paper. The dancer is show in a swirl of vivid colors in the midst of graceful motion, the diaphanous veil trailing sinuously around her. In the recently-published and quite revealing geography of the dancer, we read that: the French had always taken Loie more seriously than the Americans had, and they did so again after she reappeared at the Folies-Bergere on October 21, 1897Ö.She had maintained her fame by constantly adding something new to her workÖbut with her latest creations, especially the fire dance and the lily dance, she was again enthralling the Paris public (Loie Fuller, p.111). it is works such as this which reveal Cheret to be an exceptional fine artist, one not limited to the graphic arts which he mastered and revolutionized.
