While most of the units work turned out to be doctrinaire and dull, this first effort, made by respected directed Yuli Raizman with a capable cast, gained some acclaim for its stark portrayal of the inhuman conditions in Siberian work camps during the early decades of the century.  The plot concerns an unsuccessful revolt of the political prisoners against a new warden who turns out to be a cruel, sadistic tyrant.
